ADAM SHANER was born about 1750 in Germany, and died about 1810 in PA. It has not been proven that Adam is our patriarch however information from the census makes it seem very likely. Adam appears in the 1810 Muncy Creek Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania census. He died between 1810 and Aug 27, 1811, when his will was probated. The will names Adam's children as: John, Magdelena, Jacob, Adam, Elizabeth, Fredrick, and Anna Mary.

JACOB SHANER was born 1776 in Germany, and died before 1870 in Pennsylvania He married MARY E. She was born about 1782 in Germany, and died before 1870 in PA. Jacob arrived in America in about 1795.
Jacob appears in the 1810 and 1820 Muncy Creek Twp, Lycoming Co, Pennsylvania census. In 1860 he lived in Wolf Twp, Lycoming Co, Pa.
Muncy Creek Township was formed when Muncy Township was divided for the second time in 1797. Muncy dam was built across the river at Muncy Creek Township. This dam provided the water that was needed to fill the canal along a stretch of canal that began at Port Penn and ended at Sunbury. The dam, canal and towing path were all constructed for a considerable amount of money. Around these construction projects, the hamlet of Port Penn was built. Upon completion of the canal in 1834 it was already a thriving community featuring a manufacturer of canal boats. Other businesses in Port Penn included hotels and taverns that provided housing and food for the men working on the canal, and a blacksmith and a saddle maker. There was a butcher that also operated had a grocery business, a weaver, a wagon builder, a shoemaker, an ice business, as well as several teachers, masons and general merchants.
Port Penn quickly gained a reputation as being a dangerous place that attracted "unsavory" characters. Gambling and prize fighting were two popular past times. Large amounts of alcohol were consumed by the participants furthering the danger. An organized group of counterfeiters had an operation in a cabin in Muncy Creek Township that passed fake coins onto the boatmen and others that passed by Port Penn on the canal. A riot took place during the construction of the canal that resulted in several deaths. Many children drowned in the canal and river. The railroad that largely replaced the canal was not less dangerous as several lives were claimed on the rails. Even the so called "Last Raft" to be floated down the West Branch took several lives at Port Penn. The raft hit the railroad bridge and sent 45 passengers into the river, seven of whom died.

Muncy Creek Township also was home to a thriving commercial fishing industry. The dam was an ideal point to catch fish. The bottleneck in the river caused by the dam and canal locks caused the fish to be forced into one easy to reach location. Baskets were placed along the dam and locks and tremendous amounts of fish and eels were easily caught. The dams and locks at Port Penn were destroyed by numerous floods in the West Branch Susquehanna River Valley during the late 1800s. This caused the canal to be abandoned as it was replaced by the railroads. Port Penn was since faded away. There are several homes in the area, but as a hamlet it no longer exists.
It lies on the east side of the great bend in the river where it seeps majestically around the base of Bald Eagle mountain and the land in the immediate vicinity of this bend is of unsurpassed fertility. Close to the river, a short distance below the borough of Muncy, is located the famous Warrior Spring celebrated in song and story and which figured largely in many of the old Indian legends of the neighborhood. It was a favorite gathering place for the Indian tribes of that section and has been a well known landmark for more than a century and a half.

Phillip who was born on March 14 1814 in Lycoming County and died in 1905 in Illinois. He married Melinda Jackson on January 18, 1835 in Cattaraugus Co NY. She was born in 1818 in PA.

Franklin Township was detached from Moreland in 1822 and for thirty-two years included all the territory now within the limits of the township of Jordan and for six years a portion of what is now Penn. Lairdsville is the only village in Franklin Township. It is located on Little Muncy Creek on an alluvial flat and is in the center of a very prosperous community. It was settled at an early day by Germans who had come from the original counties of the state to find a home among the hills in the lower end of Lycoming County.
Like many other sections of Lycoming County Franklin Township at an early day was an important lumbering center and much valuable timber was cut from the surrounding hills. But these days have passed and now the whole community is devoted to the farming industry, in which they have achieved a success which would hardly have been thought possible considering the hilly character of the land. The original settlers of the township were either Baptists or Lutherans.

To verify that Permilla's maiden name is Snyder, look at the 1850
Census of Penn Township, Lycoming Co., Pa. The HOH is Lewis Snyder and
his wife Elizabeth. The children are Lavina, 15; Sarah, 11; Permilla,
9; Alfred, 8; and July (sic), 6.
Missing from John Shaner's household is son Charles who shows up as a
12 year old male in the 1880 Census. But next door in the home of

Hi I'm Corby Shaner, son of Ronald Andrew Shaner (not mentioned in geneology), grandson of Richard Allen Shaner. I'm very interested in learning more about the Shaners from Lycoming County, PA. I grew up in Muncy, PA and as a child I was always asked if I was related to the Shaners in Hughesville. I never knew anybody from Hughesville, so I didn't think I had any relatives there. It appears that I actually do!
My 3rd GG Hannah Shaner still eludes me as to her parents. I know she was born approximately in 1807 in Lycoming, Pennsylvania. I have searched through records and keep coming across Jacob & Mary who could potentially be her parents. It lists above that they had two females between 1805-1810. How can I ever prove this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My GreatGreatGreatGrandFather is Philip Shaner married to Belinda Jackson. Is there any clue as to the area we came from in Germany? I also believe our name was changed from Schoener as one of the census records show a cousin visiting with that name.
